The Story Behind Quest For Fire and AI & I Review™ Whiskeys
2025 was quite the year for me. If I’m being honest, it was one of the toughest years of my life.
Work was stressful, the politics of it all wore me down, and at times it felt like everything was working against me. I experienced things I had never dealt with before — backstabbing, pressure, and a level of stress that pushed me to a very low point.
But it didn’t win.
I’m still here. Alive and kicking.
During that difficult time I discovered a few things about myself — and those discoveries eventually led to Quest For Fire.
A Bag of Sea Salt From Honduras
One day, almost randomly, I found something online that changed everything.
I came across sea salt from Honduras on eBay.
I was born in Honduras but left as a child and had never gone back. I’ve flown over it a couple of times on my way to Costa Rica, but that was as close as I had ever gotten.
So when I saw a 5-pound bag of organic sea salt from Bahía de San Lorenzo, Honduras, I bought it.
When it arrived and I tasted it, I literally got chills.
Something about that flavor connected me back to where I came from.
Then a thought hit me:
What am I going to do with five pounds of sea salt?
That single spark led to experimentation in the kitchen.
Those experiments led to salt blends.
Salt blends led to dry rubs.
Dry rubs led to hot sauces.
And before I knew it, I had created Quest For Fire.
Finding Myself Again
The second thing I rediscovered during that difficult year was something far more important — myself.
What kept me grounded through all of it were my kids.
My daughter attends the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and my son is a freshman at Mira Costa High School here in Manhattan Beach, California.
They are my world.
I also often think back to where my journey began — growing up in Washington Heights in Manhattan, New York City. That neighborhood shaped a lot of who I am today, and it’s also the inspiration behind some of the names you'll see across my hot sauces and products.
Over the years, my career has taken me around the world — from Singapore, China, and India to England, France, Turkey, Mexico, and Costa Rica, and I’ve been fortunate enough to visit most of the United States as well.
Every one of those experiences influences the flavors I create.
Discovering the World of Whiskey
The third discovery during that difficult period was something unexpected.
Whiskey.
Like many people dealing with stress, sometimes you reach for a drink. But in my case something different happened — I discovered a craft and a culture.
My first real introduction came in Las Vegas at Cut by Wolfgang Puck, where I had my first Old Fashioned.
The food was incredible.
The drink was even better.
That moment opened the door to a completely new world.
Bartenders, collectors, and enthusiasts began explaining the details that make whiskey fascinating — distilleries, mash bills, barrel aging, finishing techniques, and the stories behind each bottle.
What I discovered most was the bourbon and whiskey community, and what impressed me was how welcoming it is. Passionate collectors, casual drinkers, bartenders, and aficionados all sharing knowledge and appreciation for the craft.
A Rookie Bourbon Collector
Now, I know better than to drink heavily, so instead of drinking whiskey, I started collecting it.
Some bottles I buy because of the story.
Others because of the label design.
Some because of the history behind the distillery.
And yes, a few because they proudly feature the American flag.
The funny part?
I rarely open the bottles.
Some of them are valuable, some are not — and I’ll be the first to admit I’m still a rookie collector.
That said, I’ve had the chance to taste some incredible whiskeys along the way.
One style I particularly love is cigar-pairing whiskey, such as The Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve. I also have bottles like Penelope Cigar Sessions Chapter 1 and Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select, which I first tasted during a Chargers game at SoFi Stadium.
And yes — I’ve even tasted legendary bottles like Pappy Van Winkle.

My love for flavor eventually led me to connect two worlds I enjoy:

This is where the idea for AI & I Review™ Whiskeys was born.
Instead of reviewing whiskey the traditional way, I take things a step further by pairing each whiskey with food and seasoning.
Every AI & I Review™ Whiskey will explore:

A lot of people think they can build a brand or create products.
But passion is the difference between making something and creating something meaningful.
Quest For Fire was born from a difficult year, but it also became a reminder that something good can come out of even the toughest moments.
